colours 2013...

Black - During the first week of term the children were given the opportunity just to have free-play to introduce them to all the activities we have on offer at playgroup. The first colour that the children learnt about was black, they looked closely at newspaper print with magnifying glasses, and then used their hands to mix black and white paint to make grey.
Red - During red week, the children were given opportunities to manipulate red jelly and find the shapes hidden in it, and then they used red collage materials to make pieces of artwork to display on the walls.
Yellow - To make the most of the glorious weather we had during our yellow week the children were accompanied on a walk around the village to find both man-made and natural yellow items. We also enjoyed adding yellow food colouring to shaving foam and then mark-maked in it. The children recognised yellow foods such as bananas, lemons and melons. We used scales to discover which was the heaviest food.
Blue - We had lots of fun during blue week using blue coloured water in the trough, and then using lots of different types of containers we poured it through the water wall. With large paint brushes and squirty bottles we created marks on the floor. Indoors, we added blue glitter to sand and then practised our over writing skills by using funnels to pour the sand over patterned cards. The children took it in turns to control our blue remote control police car.
Green - The children put on their wellies and waterproofs and were allowed to use their feet to mix blue and yellow paint to discover that they could turn the paint green. They were encouraged to walk along a piece of blank paper and look at the footprint patterns they had made. Once they were all familiar with the colour green they went indoors to search for green items in the classroom to place on the discovery table. They also had fun manipulating cornflour and water with green food colouring to make gloop.
The children have been reinforcing their learning of primary colours by using the 2simple paint programme on the computer, playing colour games on the I-pad, programming the bee-bot to visit different colours on his map, free painting and discussing the colours of Mr Hapus and ffrindiau when singing the song Mr Hapus ydw i.
