Asthma Policy

Llanddulas playgroup welcomes all children with asthma. We recognise that asthma is an important condition affecting many children and we encourage all children to take part fully in all activities.

We ensure children with asthma at playgroup have immediate access to their reliever inhaler; we do this by keeping children's labelled inhalers and pre-school asthma cards in a box, next to the first aid box.

We ensure that our environment is smoke free, we have a no smoking policy, and we do not keep furry or feathery pets on the premises.

Parent/carers need to:

Provide written information detailing:

  • What asthma medicines are taken and when.
  • What triggers an asthma attack and what to do if the asthma gets worse.
  • Emergency contact details.
  • Complete a pre-school asthma card with the above information.
  • And a medical emergency form.
  • Ensure that their child's medication is clearly labelled and not passed the expiry date.

Parents must complete and sign an asthma inhaler medicine form to give permission for inhalers to be given; this is kept with the inhaler.

Staff need to:

Complete the medicine form each time the inhaler is given and ensure the form is signed by the parent/carer when they are informed the inhaler has been given, if the child goes on to another setting or another person collects the child a medicine dosage information form will be sent home and the parent telephoned.

Staff must ensure inhalers are taken on all walks and trips.

Key workers need to liaise with the child's parents about planning for and controlling a child's asthma, they should be fully aware of the child's needs on the preschool asthma card this information should be shared with all staff.
